Maple Knoll Village Receives Funding for Skilled Nursing

The Robert and Christine Steinmann Family Foundation has awarded Maple Knoll Village $21,000 to purchase equipment that will help improve the lives of those living in skilled nursing at Maple Knoll Village.

The Robert and Christine Steinmann Family Foundation has a mission to help those in need help themselves through knowledge and resources that improve the quality of their lives and the lives of future generations. One particular focus of theirs is aid and medical care for the elderly and needy. The Robert and Christine Steinmann Family Foundation has a long history of supporting Maple Knoll Communities and were more generous than ever this year.

Maple Knoll staff reached out to the foundation to receive support for necessary items that help improve care for the elderly we serve. In particular, Maple Knoll was desperately in need of iPads for electronic medical records and new equipment in the Rehabilitation Center in skilled nursing. This center offered occupational, physical and speech therapy and new updates would allow for a smoother recovery for some.

In addition to the iPads these funds will be used to purchase wheelchairs and to create home like settings such as a kitchen and laundry room in the center. This will allow individuals to practice real life tasks in order for them to recover and live on their own once again. Without the generosity of The Robert and Christine Steinmann Family Foundation these additions would not be available to the clients at Maple Knoll.

Maple Knoll Communities is a non-profit home providing services including residential accommodations, assisted living, rehabilitation and skilled nursing care. As a nationally recognized leader in the care and support of older adults since 1848, Maple Knoll Communities, Inc. has offered innovative, holistic residential and community-based programs that improve the quality of life and respond to individuals’ changing needs as they age.

The Wellness Center at Maple Knoll Village Knows the Importance of Exercise in your Retirement Years!

You know it’s important, right? But do you know why it is important? The benefits of working out are many and what is even more amazing is that it doesn’t take forever to reap the benefits of exercise. The benefits are nearly immediate!

During your workout, your lungs get stronger as they practice the expansion and retraction required by breathing a little harder. Your heart is getting stronger by pumping blood to all the working muscles of the body. While working out, your motivation to improve your physical body is aided by the endorphins generated by the workout. (Endorphins are mood enhancing chemicals in your brain). Moderate exercise elevates proteins that help bolster your immune system, protecting you from colds and flu (the effect last for 24 hours, so you need to continue exercising for prolonged protection).

Within one day of starting exercising, you are adding lean muscle, increasing your metabolism and increasing the blood flow to the brain. Within one week of exercise, your risk of diabetes goes down, you are fitter and leaner and you are often slimmer. You may also be sleeping better! And with one year of a regular exercise program, it is a well ingrained habit. You can’t stand missing! Your heart rate is lower. Your cells are superefficient at breaking down fat to use it as fuel. Your cancer risk is lowered. And you are adding healthier years to your life!

So now you know why it is important to exercise! And that is just the tip of the iceberg! Join us at The Hemsworth Wellness Center to learn more!

Summer Strolling in Cincy

Filed under: Cincinnati, Resident Life, walking, wellness

Looking for a reason to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather?  Go for a walk.  .  Whether you’re a nature lover or window shopper; lollygagger or power walker, Cincinnati has plenty of places to take a stroll.  Our top five include the following:

 1.  Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum

Don’t let the “cemetery” chase you away.  This rural garden cemetery has 450 acres of developed grounds and 300 acres of woodland right in the heart of Cincinnati.  With an extensive collection of flowering trees, shrubs and perennials, you’re sure to enjoy the beautiful sights.  Plus it’s quiet.  Public tours are available.

2.  Smale Riverfront Park

If you haven’t been down to the riverfront lately then you’re missing the newest extension to Sawyer Point.  Phase One of Smale Riverfront Park, part of Cincinnati Parks, opened this past spring.  Smale features a labyrinth, a walking mediation space, with a single winding path that spirals inward.  The Ohio River Trail passes through the park and there’s a tree grove, bike center, open lawn plus the Moerlein Lager House, a microbrewery and restaurant that offers sweeping views of the riverfront area.  For the latest developments at Smale, go to mysmaleriverfrontpark.org.

3.  Mount Airy Forest

Located on the west side of Cincinnati, Mt.Airyoffers miles of hiking trails.  Pick up a map and follow one of the 12 trails, ranging from 3 miles to a half a mile.  Or for more of a scenic stroll, wander through the specialty gardens at the Mt. Airy Arboretum and along the picturesque lake.  There’s plenty of shelter space so be sure to pack a picnic.

4.  Belleview, Kentucky

If your idea of stroll includes window shopping and grabbing a bite, then head across the river to Belleview, Kentucky. Historic Fairfield Avenueis lined with century-old buildings, home to unique shops and an eclectic assortment of dining.  If you want to break a sweat, head towards the river and walk along the paths at Bellevue Beach Park.  There’s always something happening in Belleview from the Zombie Crawl in October to the Christmas Walk in November.  Check out shopbellevueky.com.

5.  Mount Storm Park

Time your walk just right and you’ll be able to catch one of the best sunsets in the area at Mount Storm Park.  Nestled on top of a hill in Clifton, the park offers breathtaking views of Cincinnati.  You’ll want to do more gazing then walking.

Of course if you’re ever in the Springdale area, we invite to stop by the Maple Knoll Village campus.  Situated on 53 acres, we offer walking paths, beautiful landscape and several gardens including our Life Enriching garden and the Tranquility garden.
